Students living in East Wichita are served by Wichita Public School District No. 259. USD 259 provides its students with the necessary tools and facilities and top educators so that they can become confident, responsible citizens and future leaders. The district is comprised of 57 elementary schools, 17 middle schools, and 11 high schools, which includes one magnet high school. USD 259 currently has over 49,000 students enrolled within the district, with roughly 4,000 teachers, 3,000 staff and 240 administrators, making it the largest school district between the Mississippi River and Denver. As such, USD 259 is considered the fourth largest employer in the county.
Residents who are interested in obtaining a university, college or trade/vocational degree or certificate have many options to do so at Wichita State University, Wichita Area Technical College, Lithuania Christian College, Southwestern College Professional Studies, Midwestern College, Newman University, and Friends University, to name a few.

The City of Wichita itself is known as “The Air Capital of the World,” so it’s only natural that within the Greater Wichita area the largest employers include companies that manufacture aircraft parts and planes, such as Cessna Aircraft Company, Spirit AeroSystems, and Hawker Beechcraft. The healthcare industry makes up the second largest employment sector in Wichita, and as mentioned earlier, Wichita Public School District No. 259 is also one of the largest employers within the county. Other industries that offer employment to the residents of Sedgwick County include accommodation and food services; agriculture; social assistance; finance and insurance; and professional, scientific and technical services.
Attractions & Points of Interest
If you’re an avid shopper, East Wichita has everything you could possibly ever need—whether you enjoy spending the day antiquing, or you’re just on the hunt for terrific deals. Towne East and Towne West make up the area’s two largest malls, which includes over 270 stores and restaurants. Shoppers will also want to check out Wichita Old Town, a restored historic warehouse district that includes a variety of shops. Wichita is also known for its many antiques shops, where it’s guaranteed you’ll find some unusual and unique treasures. If you’re more of a bargain shopper, be sure to check out the Newton Factory Outlet Stores located in the City of Newton.
If you’re looking to take the family or your classroom out on an outing, museums such as the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, the Wichita Art Museum, Wichita Sedgwick County Historical Museum, the Kansas Aviation Museum, and the Museum of World Treasures are excellent sites of interests. Or if you’d like to step outside of the museum environment, the Sedgwick County Zoo and the Sedgwick County Extension Arboretum are other great places to spend the day. The Zoo is a wildlife park and is nationally and internationally recognized for its conservation programs and 2,500 onsite animals. The Arboretum features an assortment of drought tolerant trees with funny names, such as Kentucky Coffeetree, Western Soapberry and Sawtooth Oak, over 200 trees, vegetable and rose gardens, and offers lectures and classes.
Live theatre patrons will be pleased to find that Wichita serves as the cultural arts center for the State of Kansas. East Wichita residents looking to see a show in an intimate theatre can head downtown for the famed Orpheum Theatre. If you’re looking to enjoy the symphony, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and the Music Theatre of Wichita perform at the Century II Convention Hall, which is also located downtown.
East Wichita has plenty of festivals and events planned throughout the year that brings the community together for food and fun. One of the biggest events that residents look forward to is the Sedgwick County Fair. An annual event that comes around in July, the fair is free to the public and includes rides, food vendors, 4-H events, and the ever-popular Demolition Derby Cars. Other festivals include the Wichita River Festival, which happens in May and draws in more than 350,000 people, the Wichita Jazz Festival in April, the Midwest Winefest, and the Kansas Flight Festival. Cultural events that celebrate the diversity of Wichita also take place in Sedgwick County throughout the year.
Parks & Recreation
One of the main parks residents living in East Wichita have access to is Sedgwick County Park. The park features five beautiful lakes where fishing is allowed (you must show proof of a fishing license) and has docks available. Barbeque grills, volleyball, bocce, tennis and basketball courts are available, as are open shelters. Other popular lakes for catch and release fishing within the county are located in Buffalo Park, Chisholm Creek Park, Watson Park and South Lake. Largemouth Bass, Bluegill and Channel Catfish are typically the types of fish you’d find in the waters of Sedgwick County.
Lake Afton Park is also located in Sedgwick County and allows residents plenty of opportunities to fish, boat, enjoy many water sports activities, and camp. Many facilities are provided for the public by the park, such as three swimming areas, fishing docks with feeders, six shelter houses, playgrounds, and a boat ramp. A public observatory and an outdoor shooting range are also available on site.
For golfers looking to spend a day on the links, nearby golf courses include the Crestview Country Club (which requires a membership to the club), MacDonald Golf Course, Wichita Country Club, Willowbend Golf Club, Twin Lakes Golf Course (located in McConnell Air Force Base), and Flint Hills National Golf Club.
